1️⃣Gun-control laws in America: over and over again… President Joe Biden called for stricter gun-control laws in America, after two recent mass shootings in Boulder, Colorado and Atlanta, Georgia. Mr Biden urged the Senate to re-enact a ban on assault weapons and pass two bills that would close loopholes in background checks for gun purchases. Democrats push for such proposals after each massacre, only to be blocked by Republicans. Bilibili, a video-streaming platform, raised $2.6bn from a stockmarket listing in Hong Kong. It is the third American-listed Chinese company to sell shares on the territory’s exchange this year, as Sino-American tensions encourage companies to float closer to home. American lawmakers have previously threatened to delist Chinese companies, and relations between the Biden administration and the Chinese government have made a rocky start. 3️⃣Trade winds: currency intervention in Asia Factory Asia is humming. Asian exports, especially of electronics, have been one of the few bright spots in the pandemic-plagued global economy. Orders for Taiwan’s exports soared by 49% year-on-year in the first two months of 2021, while South Korea’s exports for the first 20 days of March were up by 12.5% year-on-year, according to data published this week. That bodes well for the countries’ growth but creates a headache for their governments. Giant trade surpluses would normally lead to stronger currencies. But Asian central banks have intervened to curb appreciation, reflected by a record jump in their foreign-exchange reserves last year. America’s Treasury has already declared Vietnam a currency manipulator and warned eight others in Asia, including Taiwan, raising the possibility that it could try to limit purchases from them. With their exports remaining so strong, calls for Asian countries to let their currencies rise will only get louder.
