The book I’m going to share today is not only related to leadership but also your life. This book is called “Infinite game” written by a well-known author: Simon Sinek. He has published many books. The most famous is his speech on the TED TALK: The Golden-Circle. You can also search it on the internet.

我今天要分享的這本書不僅與領導力有關,而且與您的生活有關。這本書被稱為「無限賽局」,作者是著名作家:賽門.西奈克。他出版了許多書籍。最著名的是他在 TED TALK 上的演講:黃金圈法則。您也可以在網路上搜尋它。

What is the Golden-Circle? The idea is very simple. He drew 3 circles from the inside to the outside. The inner layer is called "Why", which means the reason and the meaning; the middle layer is called "How", which means the method or technology of doing things; the outer layer is called "What", which means the thing and details you are doing. Simon said that most people know the outside layer, but don't know the inner layer. Most people know what they do, but only few people and organizations know why they do. "Why" means your purpose, your call, and what you believe. For example, why your organization exist? And why you get up early? Simon encourages us to communicate and take action from the inside out. I think the idea of golden circle is related to the book we are going to share today.

什麼是黃金圈法則?這個想法很容易明白。他從裡到外畫了3個圓圈。內層叫why,指原因和意義;中間層叫how,指的是做事的方法或技術;外層叫what,意思是你正在做的事情和細節。賽門說,大多數人知道外層,但不知道內層。大多數人知道他們在做什麼,但只有少數人和組織知道他們為什麼這樣做。「為什麼」意味著你的目的、你的天命和你相信什麼。例如,您的組織為什麼存在?還有你為什麼要早起?賽門鼓勵我們從內到外溝通並採取行動。我認為黃金圈法則與我們今天要分享的這本書有關。

Let’s talk about this book. This book is called "Infinite Game". At the beginning, Simon separated two concepts, finite game, and infinite game. Finite game has a clear finish line, there is a winner and loser, just like soccer and chess; Infinite Game means that we try everything we can do to stay in a game. The purpose of the infinite game is not to win or lose, but to keep the game going on, and make everyone in the game become better. For example, when we start a company, we are not pursuing to create products to defeat our opponents but to let consumers enjoy the life. The pursuit of winning or losing games is called a finite game. The pursuit of the game going on is called the Infinite game.

我們來談談這本書。這本書叫「無限賽局」。一開始,賽門區分了兩個概念,有限賽局和無限賽局。有限賽局有明確的終點線,有輸有贏,就像足球和西洋棋一樣;無限賽局意味著我們要盡一切努力留在遊戲中。無限賽局的目的不是贏或輸,而是讓遊戲繼續下去,讓遊戲中的每個人都變得更好。比如我們開公司,我們追求的不是創造出可以打敗對手的產品,而是讓消費者享受更好的生活。追求輸贏的比賽被稱為有限賽局。追求讓遊戲繼續進行下去稱為無限賽局。

Simon compares the two world-famous companies, Microsoft and Apple because Apple first launched an mp3 player called iPod, Microsoft wants to beat the iPod, also launched an mp3 player called Zune player, Microsoft is so confident that they believe Zune’s function is better than iPod, in fact, maybe it’s true. But for Apple’s culture, they don’t really want to beat the competition, but to create better products and give people a better life. So as we know, Apple is more powerful than Microsoft now.

賽門比較了微軟和蘋果這兩家世界知名的公司,因為蘋果首先推出了一款名為iPod的mp3播放器,微軟想要打敗iPod,還推出了一款名為Zune的mp3播放器,微軟自信滿滿,認為Zune的功能比iPod更好,或許這是真的。但對於蘋果的文化來說,他們並不是真的想打敗競爭對手,而是創造出更好的產品,給人們更好的生活。所以我們知道,現在蘋果比微軟更強大。

To achieve infinite games, Simon said there are 5 steps: 

The first is "Just Cause" 
The second is "Trusting Team"
The third is "Worthy Rival"
The fourth is "The Existential Flexible" 
The fifth is "The Courage to Lead"

要達成無限賽局,Simon說有5個條件:
 
第一個條件是崇高的理想
第二個條件是建立信任的團隊
第三是研究可敬的對手
第四是準備好攸關存亡的應變
第五是領導的勇氣

About this book, I would like to give you a brief explanation according to my understanding: For example, the first one. What is a just cause? The just cause does not mean that we have to be the No. 1 in the market. How much profit will be made this year, nor does it mean that our company has CSR. CSR is Corporate Social Responsibility. The general understanding of CSR is that companies will do some charity, foundations, help the disadvantaged, clean beaches, etc.

關於這本書,我想根據我的理解給大家簡單的解釋一下:比如第一本。什麼是崇高的理想?崇高的理想並不意味著我們必須成為市場第一。今年能賺多少,也不代表我們公司有CSR。 CSR是企業社會責任。 CSR的一般理解是,公司會做一些慈善,基金會,幫助弱勢群體,淨灘等。

It does not mean that charity is not good, it is good, but if the employees in the company are all upset and unhappy, it is meaningless when we do CSR, so the just cause is like: I want to create a company with "love", and everyone in this company will love each other. There is a just cause that people are willing to sacrifice themselves to achieve the ideal for the company, but this ideal must also be achieved by a trusted team. If a supervisor sees a new employee, the supervisor has to offer help to let new employees feel safe, so everyone will be willing to stay and work hard for the company.

不是說慈善不好,慈善是好的,但是如果公司裡的員工都做得不開心,我們做CSR是沒有意義的,所以崇高的理想是像這樣的:我想創建一個有“愛”的公司,這個公司的每個人彼此互敬互愛。崇高的理想是人們願意為實現公司的理想而犧牲自己,但這種理想也必須由值得信任的團隊來實現。如果上司看到新員工,上司必須提供幫助,讓新員工有安全感,這樣每個人都會願意留下來為公司努力工作。

In fact, many supervisors won’t give employees more chances to improve. If an employee makes mistakes, the supervisor will fire him quickly. If the supervisor does not give the employees the opportunity to make mistakes, the employees who are still at the position will be nervous, and even hide problems. In the long run, it will become a trustless company, which is not good for the entire organization.

事實上,許多主管不會給員工更多的改進機會。如果員工犯錯,主管會迅速解僱他。如果上司不給員工犯錯的機會,留在崗位上的員工就會緊張,甚至隱藏問題。從長遠來看,它將成為一個不值得信任的公司,這對整個組織都不利。

So if we want to use one word to describe what is called an infinite game, I would say it’s “Capacity”. It means we are able to endure failure and mistakes, and we should not think about winning or losing. What really matters is that we keep playing the game, and help our employees, customers, team members, and rivals positively in this game, so that we can build the real trust and innovation. “Capacity” is an ignored characteristic, but it’s the main idea when we play the infinite game.

所以如果我們要用一個詞來形容所謂的無限遊戲,我會說它是「氣量」。這意味著我們能夠忍受失敗和錯誤,我們不應該考慮輸贏。真正重要的是我們繼續玩這個遊戲,在這個遊戲中積極幫助我們的員工、客戶、團隊成員和競爭對手,這樣我們才能建立真正的信任和創新。 「氣量」是一個被忽略的特質,但它是我們玩無限賽局時的主要思想。

At last, I would like to use the words written by Simon for his grandmother at the beginning of this book to conclude the concept of Infinite games: “Dear grandma, because you lived as if there was no finish line, may we all learn to live such an infinite life.” Love, Simon
