Today, I would like to share a story of a Taiwanese woman. The book is called: “The Making of an Ordinary Woman”. The author is 江鵝, a Taiwanese female writer. She wrote this book based on her own story. She was born in 1975 and grew up with Taiwan’s economic development. Taiwanese women in this era have an ideal "lady image" in their minds.
You have to be clever, but you also have to listen to your parents and teachers; Concentrate on your study and do housework. To do a stable job and have a wonderful marriage; Be a traditional and modern woman at the same time; To be obedient and independent simultaneously. In one word, it is really difficult to fulfill these conditions, so the author thought that she was just an ordinary woman. Although she was not able to become a lady that people expect, she made her own life.
The book was also adapted into a TV series, now it has 2 seasons. The main actress is 謝盈萱, who won the best leading actress in Golden Horse Awards in 2018. The main character in the TV series is called 陳嘉玲. She has no house, no car, no husband, nor child, and she also lost her job when she was 39 years old. 陳嘉玲 was born in the countryside of Tainan. Her family ran a traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmacy.
She lived with her grandparents, mom and dad, and a younger brother. Three generations lived in the same house. Since she was a child, she would talk about gossip with grandma and aunt in the room, such as what kind of man was the ideal husband in the future. She also followed her mother to the dancing course, and go shopping with her grandma in the traditional market. Her grandpa sometimes asks her to buy bread for family members, and everyone eats different tastes. What a lovely story. The experience of living in a big family is something that I don’t have. It makes me jealous. I pick one story from this book to share with you.
The story is about learning to play the piano. When the author was a child, her parents asked her if she wanted to learn piano, because they felt that "Piano Teacher" is a decent job for girls. The piano teacher had high social status, free working hours, and they didn’t have to pay taxes. When she was going to take piano lessons in the city, she had to take an hour by bus. The bus drove very fast on the mountain road. She would throw up while sitting, but after several times, she got used to it. She didn’t vomit anymore.
On the way to learn to play the piano, there is a noodle shop. When she was hungry, her mother would take her to eat. A bowl of sesame sauce noodles, with a soup, sprinkle some pepper and sesame oil, especially when you smell the fragrance in the cold weather, it is really comfortable, now the bowl of sesame sauce noodles in the memory has become the best taste. Then, she went to the piano teacher’s home for class. The class was in the western pharmacy with the white clinic. It was different from the Chinese medicine pharmacy, and there was a Christmas tree during Christmas. Because the piano teacher’s father was a doctor, the piano was placed in the living room on the second floor, that is, the whole piano learning is elegant and advanced.
If it’s late to go home, and the author is hungry, her mother would take her to the kitchen to cook instant noodles. Eating instant noodles was usually not allowed at home. This is the secret between her and mom. When she grew up, she didn’t want to learn the piano and even thought about burning the piano, as a result, in the end, she didn't learn the piano well, but she was very grateful for having these experiences so that she could be with her mom and dad alone every week, like she ate a bowl of noodles with her mother on the street.
I also learned to play the piano when I was a child, but I gave up quickly, I just learned for one month. By the way, I was the only boy in the piano classroom, other classmates are all girls, that’s a very special memory for me. In my opinion, learning to play the piano is the symbol to become the middle class, especially in the rapid economic development time in Taiwan. Nowadays, more and more Taiwanese start to think about what kind of person they want to be. Maybe we don’t have to be perfect, be an ordinary person is also an option. Most important of all, live a life of your own and be the best version of yourself. Thank you for listening today. Meet you on the air next time. Bye-bye.
