今天一起來看contain (v.) 包含include (v.) 包含、comprise (v.) 包含和 consist (v.) 包含。如果大家只看中文，應該會覺得這幾個字都有一樣的意思吧。不過大家要注意的是，中文的意思看起來雖然一樣，但是要特別注意英文的用法，他們適用的不同情境，有時候可以互換，有時候卻不行。
(一) include (v.) 包含; 包括
用include (v.) 來形容某物是某個群體裡的一部分，例如：小費是否含在帳單中，或是Covid19包含有很多症狀，都可以用include。如果公司有很多不同的福利，你要說包含哪些福利，你也會用include這個字。另外，include可以用在被動語態或是主動與態。
例句1: Gratuity is not included but appreciated. 小費沒有包含在裡面但是我們會很感激。
例句2: Symptoms include headache, sore throat or fever. 症狀包含頭痛、喉嚨痛或發燒。
例句3: Employee benefits include health insurance and paid vacation. 員工福利包含健康保險和有薪假。
(二) contain (v.) 包含; 容納; 控制
這個字contain 的常用意思是包含;容納;盛裝，大家看這個字的是不是和container (n.) 容器有相關，所以contain常用在本質的東西，或是包含其中，也有控制的意思。contain 和include 不同的地方是在於contain 是原來就在含有的東西，或是實質東西在容器裡，這時就不會用include。
例句1: The film contains some scenes of adult content. 這影片有含成人內容。
例句2: Fruits and vegetables contain many vitamins and minerals. 水果和蔬菜含很多維他命和礦物質。
例句3: Many major bottled water brands contain plastic particles. 很多大廠牌的瓶裝水含有塑膠微粒。
(三) comprise (v.) 包含; 包括;組成; 構成
這個字comprise可用主動語態或被動語態，用一個字comprise 表主動語態，後面不加介系詞，但是用在被動語態時要用介系詞of，所以我們會用be comprised of當 組成 。
例句1: The house comprises 5 spacious bedrooms. 這房子由5間寬敞的大房間組成。
例句2: The TOEIC course is comprised of twelve lectures. 這門多益課程包含12堂課。
例句3: The United States of America is comprised of 50 states. 美國是由50洲組成。
(四) consist (v.) 包含; 組成; 構成
如果把comprise 和consist 拿來比較，字典的解釋說：comprise 會比consist 更正式。要記得的是comprise可以有主動或被動語態，但是consist of 組成只有主動語態，沒有被動式，也沒有進行式。
例句1: The group consists of business leaders. 這個團體包含商業領袖。
例句2: The committee consists of 10 permanent members. 委員會八位永久會員組成。
例句3: Typically, an interview consists of three parts. 典型地，面談由三個部分組成。
