1️⃣US feat. Taiwan v. China: over and over again… In an unusual move, America published the schedule of planned talks with Taiwan, which will start online today. Discussions are expected to focus on development, military co-operation and arms deals. China objects to communication between the two, especially on military and political matters, because such talks undermine its assertion that Taiwan is part of its territory. 2️⃣Italian politics: always in some kind of peril… A squabble over how Italy should spend its share of the EU’s covid-recovery fund threatens to derail the country’s government. Italia Viva, a junior party in the coalition headed by Giuseppe Conte, is demanding that the government overhaul its economic plan and invest more in health care. Italia Viva has only 48 out of 945 seats in parliament, but that is enough to strip Mr Conte’s government of its majority. 3️⃣Flipping the Senate: Democrats in Georgia Just two months after Georgia gave its electoral votes to a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 1992, it flipped its two Senate seats. Raphael Warnock, an African-American preacher at Martin Luther King junior’s former church, defeated Kelly Loeffler. Jon Ossoff, a 33-year-old Jewish film-maker, beat David Perdue. Both lead their defeated rivals by margins that are bigger than the threshold required to trigger a recount. Run-off elections such as these usually favour Republicans, whose voters tend to be older, wealthier and more reliable. But this year Democrats managed to turn out their base—particularly African-Americans. The two wins would give Democrats control of the Senate with the thinnest possible majority, ensuring approval for Joe Biden’s cabinet and judicial appointments as well as dealmaking power for the chamber’s centrists. Ms Loeffler and Mr Perdue lashed themselves to Donald Trump, and they shared his fate.
