Trade analysts will dutifully review the Office for National Statistics’ update on Britain’s balance of payments for the final quarter of 2020 when it is published today. But really they are much more interested in what came after December 31st. Analysts want to assess the immediate economic impacts of Brexit, but the task is far from simple. Trade data for January showed a 40.7% fall in exports to the European Union compared with December. Much of that is explained by the drop-off in pre-Brexit stockpiling and pandemic-induced difficulties in trading, but some no doubt reflects new trade frictions. Particular problems have come in sectors such as meat and fish, which are now subject to sanitary and phytosanitary checks. Exporters argue that a system designed for handling crates of frozen New Zealand lamb cannot cope with small shipments of time-sensitive goods such as fresh salmon. The pain from Brexit will keep piling up. ⚜️Daily takeaway⚜️ 每日單字精選 ✅Dutifully (adv.): 忠實地 (副) ✅Balance of payments (n.): 國際收支帳 (名) ✅Assess (v.): 評估 (動) ✅Immediate (adj.): 即時的 (形) ✅Drop-off (n.): 下跌 (名) ✅Stockpiling (n.): 庫存、儲存 (名) ✅Friction (n.): 摩擦、衝突 (名) ✅Sanitary (adj.): 衛生的 (形) ✅Phytosanitary (adj.): 植物檢疫的 (形) ✅Cope with (v.): 應付、面對、處理 (動) — ✔︎ 按讚【每日一經濟學人】Facebook 粉專: ✔︎ 追蹤【每日一經濟學人】Instagram 帳號: ✔︎ 訂閱【每日一經濟學人】YouTube 頻道: ✔︎ 閱讀【每日一經濟學人】Medium 平台: — 🔶如有商業合作或業務需求,請洽 🔴如影音內容有誤,歡迎來信勘誤
