進行曲的歷史和軍樂隊(military band)的演變其實也有很長的發展歷史，最早的軍樂隊在13世紀就有記載，進行曲在16世紀後也開始受到了重視。
而我們總說是藝術源於生活，但我們一般熟知的音樂史卻都只專注在那些在音樂廳或舞台上發生的歷史，而這些功能性高於藝術性的進行曲，卻是真真正正的從戰場上發展而來。
