there are two main areas of concern with the plug-ins: quality and quantity. the quality of the plug-ins is high, but there are only a very limited number of them, and the ones that you do get are a little basic. some of the ones that you do get are also very basic, and can't be easily extended. for example, if you want to load a certain part of a song, you're not allowed to move the song's start time and end time using the timeline navigation bar, but have to change the track's automation and insert a new automation region. similarly, you can't automate the track's dynamics to make it sound like a different instrument. thus, it's often impossible to create a good mix when using the plug-ins. pro tools also doesn't seem to have an audio effects plug-in, so there's no way to apply an eq or compressor to a track, for example. in all, i'd say the new version is a definite improvement over the previous version, though there are still a few bugs to iron out, and with the full version of the complete production toolkit 2, there are still a few important missing features. like i said at the start, i expect to see the limitations and quirks addressed over the next few months, and hope that avid will finally make core audio and asio really work with pro tools. like i said at the start, i'm keen to see a pro tools system that allows me to create a studio as a single unit, rather than in pieces, which means that it needs to work well with a combination of hardware and software. i'm starting to wonder how many people think that's a pipe dream and that only the big boys can afford to make a custom product like that. in the long term, however, software is going to be the only way to deliver the kind of sound quality and flexibility that people want from their studio, so pro tools must respond to the market.
