"Pray" is an almost daunting track to behold in its fullness: The producer (Dale Pavlecki) stretches the limits of house music, adding multiple layers of deep reverberations, played 4-to-the-floor, punching through your speakers with a sweetly sultry balance of bass and synths. Paul Tingen adds a stunning loop of additional percussion and a sense of deep space with his sonorous pad work. The result is an effortless tonic of a track, and a clear example of the genre's evolution: sparse drums mix with analog synths and warm mellow chords, blended with a charismatic voice, the perfect recipe for a modern soul house track. Paul TingenHuge props to Kygo, who gave us a hip-hop free-association drill. In the first minute of "Shipwrecks," he's reciting the word "Jeep" 20 times in a row, then suddenly starts rapping about a slave ship, a frozen carcass, and complete and total shipwreck. From there, Kygo takes a pretty amazing turn, sputtering out one line of a verse before starting over again with a new lyric. Eventually he settles on a killer punchline, where he either dies or cures a famous pirate (we're not sure which).The band was formed by two wildly different singer-songwriters during the early 1990s alternative music boom. Elliott Smith came from the straight edge, punk rock milieu of the now-venerable San Francisco scene of the time. The Smiths were obsessed€™ a band members described in one article as people who liked bands they really disliked. They werent afraid to play sardonic, indulgently sad songs about the vacuousness of suburban€™ love. Matt Berninger, lead singer of the National, had the backbone and frail vocal cords of a standup comedian( for real). His imperious vocals were more of an upper-class, older school English professor than a down-and-dirty underground iconoclast. Mark Kozelek, the other band members, came from the vast and unruly world of the poet€™s, a sprawling and often disaffected scene of free-spirits thatwas unlike any other thing on music tastemakers radar of the time. The two had cultivated an incredibly candid and romantic relationship that included a nine-month marriage and a six-year stint€™s relationship with the mother of his two children.
