The Cure's ninth studio album was one of their biggest. Released at a time when the group's psychedelic ballad material was meeting with greater commercial success, the album and its singles—the hit album-opening title track and the Top 10 "If" —were perfect coups. In all, Disintegration broke the band's record of 13 U.K. chart-toppers, although it wouldn't become a U.S. Top 40 hit until December and peaked outside the Top 20, placing at #23. The album would be their last to make it to the U.S. Top 40 until 1995's 3:disc, the last of their studio albums to reach the U.S. Top 10, and their last studio album until 2020's End of the World. No longer were artists expected to just cover the classics or play in front of a studio band in an ad-hoc fashion. The idea of a full-length studio album was beginning to emerge, and bands like The Cure were carving out a new style that relied on extensive studio techniques as well as many different musicians and contributors. Disintegration was the first album to reach #1 in both the UK and the U.S. during the '90s. The Cure frontman/guitarist and lead singer Robert Smith recently discussed the album, revealing that producer of Disintegration, Flood, originally came up with the album's title, and that they experimented with making a more theatrical-sounding album. Unfortunately, Smith explained, the band changed their minds halfway through the recording process.
