here's another interesting aspect. i installed this game into my laptop, windows 7 home premium (x64) with latest patches, and the game ran for a few days, then refused to run, and in the process displayed a message box that asked me to look into the direct3d version of the engine. now, when i browse the engine's website (game.softlab.net), it mentions the direct3d version number of 1.1.1, which is the same as on the original website (so please correct me if i'm wrong): one thing i don't understand is why do they recommend the compatibility version of the engine if the graphics card couldn't support it?this was a very interesting experience. i've been primarily a 3d developer for over 15 years, and i am familiar with the commonly found resource issues, and i'm used to dealing with weird stuff, but i had no idea that a 3d game could cause a system to hang. (though i should have suspected something after my own games would randomly refuse to start on some systems.) since it didn't make sense that the direct3d version was the problem, i got out my old copy of this game and re-ran it on my main desktop pc (windows xp; 2.5 ghz amd geode; 1280x1024 at 64 bit, 256 mb ram, 4 gb hd), and sure enough, this game also hangs on startup, and i got the same error message as on the laptop, only a little bit earlier: software renderer failing.i had actually thought that the complete lack of texture memory was a bug of the demo version because the other games also stutter if i haven't allocated enough memory for the textures. but it seems to be a bit more serious, and it was this game that refused to run all the time on my original laptop, despite using the same texture memory as my current, newer copy.
