mislabeling these as retail or steam keys is deceptive at best. the former is an outdated distribution method, yet ea provides these keys, new, fairly used, and with their retail/first or third party serial numbers intact. if you plan on doing a fresh install do not install the game from steam it does not work. you can install the game from the digital download from gog.com and then use the update tool to update from the disk. this does add the ability to start with a fresh install rather than saving off your existing saves. this of course deletes all your previous saves in the process. it's a good thing to do if you're planning on doing a fresh install anyway. the new version i have is 1.1.638.0, however some of the patches on the site are different. if you're getting an older version of the program you might need to download the program and delete the saved files folder, that will normally hold data for the previous version of the game.the fact is, steam is still the exclusive place to sell video games. if it weren't for that, we'd be dealing with a situation that looks much different today. if it weren't for steam, the only place to sell video games (carts, consoles, and or lan options would be weird exceptions) would be on the venerable brick and mortar retail outlets. that is so not the case. ea has made a choice to only allow players to buy origin games through that website, a decision they have made with all gaming systems from the very moment they decided to offer consumers a way to not buy games through retailers.
