The composition of what in our time would be called a "Cordial," was born out of a collective impulse of alchemy. This was no simple concoction of herbs, an elixir of life or the future of health. Raleigh became a man who had spent the best part of the 1580's chasing after the substance of “gold.” Even though he would fail in his quest, even fortune-hunting - and later for pleasure - was frowned upon at court, Raleigh was not alone in his enthralled. With Raleigh, the attempt to distill the gold elixir that would produce a "true Philosopher’s Stone" was a good idea in more ways than one. For him, it was an elixir of life. But could something else perhaps be found, hidden in the soul of the bezoar itself?"In the year 1618, the bezoar was brought from India, by Raleigh's son Sir Walter Raleigh, on his fourth and final expedition to the new world. As the crystal heart of the stone was cracked by the efforts of the Englishmen, Sir Walter Raleigh asked a friend to sit for a portrait of the young knight-philosopher, who had nearly half a century earlier asked Raleigh to lead the quest for the mythical cities. While Raleigh's sons were in London, he spent weeks hunting after the most precious prize in the world: the bezoar. It was in this year that Raleigh wrote a recipe for a cordial and included in this recipe was a bezoar. When bezoars were examined, the process of distillation had already been developed by the time Raleigh shared his recipe. It was no coincidence that Sir Walter Raleigh was also the alchemist, and no matter what this alchemist was looking for, it seems he never found it."
