Secunia researchers discover hard-to-find vulnerabilities that arent normally identified with techniques such as fuzzing, and the results have been impressive. Members of the Secunia Research team have discovered critical vulnerabilities in products from vendors including Microsoft, Symantec, IBM, Adobe, RealNetworks, Trend Micro, HP, Blue Coat, Samba, CA, Mozilla and Apple.Reconnaissance of this vulnerability was carried out by Secunia researchers. It was found that the vulnerability resides in the email component of the Evolve Office update service. Evolve Office is a Microsoft Office program for updating documents without using the web interface. It is used in conjunction with Windows Update to download document updates in systems without internet connectivity.To further test this vulnerability researchers downloaded samples of files attached to the update service and found that it would be possible to download a malicious document that is able to be opened by the target. This document can contain a wide variety of exploits, including vulnerabilities that are not normally identified by the traditional exploitation methods such as fuzzing.An example of such a malicious document is the attached example. The first (and most likely the only) stage of an attack is the receipt of the document by the victim. A remote and local attack is possible. In a remote attack the payload is uploaded to a command and control server and in a local attack it is downloaded from a third party.Upon receipt of the document a victim will be notified that a document update is available and an update request will be sent to the victim. This is designed to act as a bypass to the Anti-Virus and Anti-Exploit process and is an attempt to bypass many of the real-time web based defences. The document will try to open an active internet connection to a remote site in order to download a VBS. The payload is extracted and then executed. MS08-067 is a remote vulnerability and MS08-065 is a local vulnerability.
