Well not sure, but I think his best performances have come in films where they have tried to put him in other contexts, and as a Khans. It worked for Babloo, and Chori Chori. Chori Chori is the most perfect. Even more than in Box office, director Ram does not feel like a director. He leaves all the right political, social and thematic questions right in the viewer's lap. (Mahatma Gandhi not eating at lunchtime? Ha! I think I have to sit up and take notice of these things.) So when he said that the movie is also about love, theres going to be an elephant in the room, to which the audience might be expected to respond as they would in real life, with laughter at the absurdity of the love affair, and giggling at the ridiculousness of it. (This being a highly respectable family, I'm not sure what the family elders would think if they knew about it, but at a cultural level, such a love could never survive in a conservatively-minded village like the Thangabali's.)Well this film should have made more of the performances. In fact the music itself could make more. As for the script, I always thought the film was darker than it was, its only me, who didnt thought the "darker side of India" theme applied. As for this film, I dont think theres that much to be said for it, even as a cliched version of itself. Kudos to Shetty for making sure that Shah Rukh isnt one of the set of people who look like they were put together out of parts from different films and not a film person in him. (The characters in the film are not all one-dimensional. Deepika has a dignified side, which she seems to be able to access when she needs to, and also the side that we see at the beginning of the film, when she is dancing, is quite different from the dignified and aggressive one at the end. So its not that way. The film can be appreciated by a more elegant, sophisticated set of audiences as well as by a more low-brow one.)
