The objective of the International Year of Grassland Restoration 2015, which runs from 19 May 2015 to 19 May 2016, is to raise awareness about the necessity of grassland restoration, to provide technical assistance to grassland restoration projects, and to increase the rates of restoration at the national, regional and global levels. The target is to restore 2.5 Mha by 2015 and to double this to 5 Mha by 2020. National grassland restoration projects may involve the entire country, one region or a district, while regional and global projects may involve several countries. Groundwork for this year-long initiative began with the first “grassroots” workshop in 2014 in the northern part of Zimbabwe and continued during the year with similar workshops in Kenya, Uganda, Mali, Ethiopia, Ethiopia, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Rwanda and Uganda. Twenty-four countries from the Southern African Development Community have officially endorsed the International Year of Grassland Restoration 2015, and the first wave of countries is preparing country plans. Around the world, over 1 000 organisations have registered for the initiative, of which 1 00 have submitted country plans and “grassroots” workshop activities. Fifteen activity-based indicators, concerning research, policy, knowledge, investment, output and social services, have been developed and used to compile the first global status report. Through the year 2015, a regional phase is to be held at the Bridgetown Conference Centre in Barbados. In the preparation and support of the training courses, as well as for the provision of advice in the developing countries, the International Year of Grassland Restoration 2015 and the PAGGW will provide technical assistance. This will be aligned with the activities of the Southern Africa Regional Centre for Plant Conservation and Small Wild Animals, which also has organised the course in South Africa. Countries have been asked to provide national capacity-building strategies, guidelines, manuals and field manuals. The final online resource will be available for download for all participants.
