if you are a medstudent or a resident and you are in need of a quick fix on any topic in the ophthalmology, this is the book to read. the editor is so well versed in this specialty that he was able to put his own spin on this very important book, making it an easy read. there are lots of cases, cartoons and animations throughout the book that serve as a reminder of how you can use what you learn in the textbook. - doodles dot comthis textbook is the ultimate in preparation for the usmle step 1 ophthalmology. it contains over 1500 topical images from dr. kanski's labs. these illustrations are complete and very well integrated into the text. they provide great clinical images and efficient review. however, i think the greatest feature is the amazing reader-friendly color scheme that makes it easy to identify areas of interest and highlights the most important topics. i highly recommend this textbook for those interested in the field of ophthalmology!clinical ophthalmology is divided into five major divisions: "anatomy", "physiology", "histology", "evaluation", and "treatment". each division has an introductory chapter that has a brief section on each of the "must-know" topics in that division. this allows the reader to quickly scan the chapter and learn the most basic aspects of that area of medicine. then there is another chapter covering the "key features" of the subject. these chapters tend to be shorter, and are more of a review. following the "key features" chapters, there is a chapter on "normal and abnormal", which discusses the various common and uncommon conditions that ophthalmologists typically come across. the chapter starts with a brief overview of anatomy followed by a discussion of normal anatomy. then there are sections on common conditions, uncommon conditions and causes, and diagnosing common and uncommon conditions. the last chapter in each division typically has a discussion on treatment. i think this is where textbooks tend to fall short for the ophthalmologist. i would have liked to have seen a section that breaks down the pros and cons of each treatment and makes the decision process easier. perhaps they could be combined in a chapter, with a section describing the advantages and disadvantages of treating a patient in general as well as in certain conditions. for instance, a surgery for a retinal detachment carries with it certain risks that can sometimes be minimized by choosing a specific laser or procedure. another chapter could have discussed this topic. i also think a chapter on referral options would be a wonderful addition. for example, they could discuss why primary care physicians are frequently referred to ophthalmologists for diagnosing and treating certain conditions, and what primary care physicians can do to provide accurate diagnoses and treatment.
