The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States and the only major American art museum on the shores of the Great Lakes. A registered research library, the Art Institute has played an important role in the study of art since 1879. It has always provided lectures, special exhibits, and educational materials to educate the public and to stimulate discussion. C-Space is the commercial aspect of C-Space, which is mainly known as an Art Gallery and Library and there are also art galleries included in C-Space, which is mainly an art museum with free admission, but also contains a small art studio and a restaurant, The Museum Cafe, for most of the year, except during the summer and school holidays. C-Space is located in the Art Institute of Chicago's 'new' building, and also includes two other spaces - The Museum Cafe and the Gallery Room. An extension to the Atrium known as 'The Maginot Line' which was originally a construction of the original 'Art Institute of Chicago'. It was to serve as a defense against art being stolen during the great Chicago Fire of 1871, but has now become a place for exhibitions, which is now used for art exhibitions most of the time. C-Space is open to the general public from Monday to Thursday from 9:30am to 4:30pm, Friday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Because C-Space is mainly an art museum with free admission, some of its galleries and studios contain art exhibits, from time to time, and also not open to the public. These galleries and studios are listed here for your convenience. Many of the galleries contain small exhibitions curated by specific art schools, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, and the École supérieure d'art des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The art works of the art schools may differ in style and sometimes even in content, but most of the time, the works displayed in these exhibitions are the works produced at the art schools in question, and the exhibitions may take the form of exhibitions, events, or traveling exhibitions curated by the schools. Also, many of the galleries have small but interesting art studios, like the Musque Studios, which are also listed here for your convenience.
