Normally, computer files are stored in the primary partition on a hard drive. But due to the different approach a forensic investigator uses to sift through data to find the clues that point to identify a suspect or evidence, it may be necessary to examine the data outside the primary partition. It is common for companies to use an operating system such as Windows operating system to store data. That causes a problem for examiners because once an individual determines what data is stored on a drive, he or she will need a way to access that data without changing the operating system. Depending on the configuration of your drive, this may mean traversing through several partitions to find the data. Getting into the saved data without changing the operating system is one of the most difficult tasks that a forensic investigator has to face, and that is where forensically-oriented imaging software comes in.There are many different types of data that a forensic investigator may need to locate, such as deleted files, partition boot records, application files, database files, captured emails, and much more. Since deleted data typically does not reside in the same location as the original data, a good way to find deleted data is to put the drive in “Drive Examiner” mode and begin scanning the hard drive.Drive Examiner mode may seem like a simple question, but in reality it can be a challenging process for a forensic investigator to realize. The challenge arises because the Drive Examiner can only examine the data on the primary partition. This means that if the drive is set to boot from a different partition, all the information on that partition will not be recovered. As an example, if the primary partition was set to boot from the second partition, a drive Examiner would not be able to recover files stored on the second partition. Another factor that may make it difficult is that a single drive might have more than one primary partition. Drive Examiner requires you to be able to identify the primary partition and if there is more than one partition, you must determine which one to use when you run the tools.
