The importance of poetry cannot be given enough importance. Indian poets in Tamil history have contributed to more than 4000 years of Indian history, politics, linguistics and literature. About 14000 poems are known to be in Tamil. No doubt, there are thousands of more unknown poems.Shree Nadar Museum and Renaissance Arts Research Centre, in Chennai has a 3-4 feet thick collection of Silappadikaram verses. The ‘Poetry’ section is quite extensive. Most of the verses are written in Tamil, but there are important verses in other languages. This is available in paperback.There are a few Tamil women poetesses but each had a different style. One who stands out is Murukanadevi. Her poems are quite passionate about the pastimes of men and women. One of the poems talks about the “Eternal play”. The poem has the following lines Kannanu aarai anubhavam aakil, / Pevarai kazhaiyum bhagavatham rakil, Kadan sapanam, Kadal mey karu,.. The poem also talks about the new generations and it says “When men are awake, I am awake. When they sleep, I sleep. All day I put on their collar and walk around.” Another poem titled Makurunthimal, talks about the “stainless” beauty of women. But men “would deviate” when they saw a woman. The most insightful poem was made by a woman poet from Tamil Nadu. It talks about how a woman would become Makurunthimala - Narayana aaram. Maarunthimala maarendu, maarunthimala maarenda. kathellaasai, janaiya vakkaaya. This was her first verse. In her next verse she talked about the strong sadness that filled her heart. She said she had witnessed many deaths in her lifetime. This was her first experience of
