the game was developed on a budget of roughly £150,000 by 22 people, all of whom were “regular” programmers, with the company having been founded in april 1998 and their debut game released in august of that year. while introversion was founded as an independent company, during the game's production they were employed by gremlin interactive, who at the time had been fully acquired by eidos (the game's publisher). before they fired, around half of the company were themselves employed at a studio called black isle studios, a former christian whitehead company who had made the icewind dale and baldur's gate games. black isle was shut down after an unstable studio founder decided to leave the company, and introversion hired the whole team. they had begun work on a game that was funded through an indiegogo website but it was removed by the project's creator after one of the core team members left to pursue his own project.in light of this, uplink still stands up as a fascinating game: it's well made, has a convincing engine and its style is both unique and very graphical. the key question, though, is whether these are enough to make it a classic.as you can see, theres a considerable number of hacking tasks in hacker elite. a good hacker on his or her own can do rather well however, theres always something more to accomplish. for instance, the public sector and private companies doesnt like the idea of hackers getting their hands on sensitive information that may sometimes have to be released to the public. and, as it happens, the people who have been managing security for the government and corporations are also infected with a virus called mind control which makes it very hard for them to think logically and reason (although they seem to come up with contradictory reasons for everything, like that we are trying to lure the government into a trap or that cutting off your arms is cheaper than keeping them to sell to drug addicts). but, as you begin the game, a revolutionary group has finally managed to implant a mind control chip in you and only you can save them from the government takeover.
