deviceeditor includes a set of standardized icons for the representation of biophysical, biochemical, and topological attributes of biological components (figure 3 ). these standardized icons can be used to depict complex combinatorial and hierarchical designs, while the accompanying textual descriptions, such as sequence annotations, are retained for meta-data management purposes (figure 2 ). as a matter of convenience, parts that have been assigned a standard icon may be color-coded for easy identification. alternatively, a user can choose to customize the color of an icon based on the part's meta-data, such as sequence annotations.deviceeditor allows the user to visualize multiple sequences on the same canvas. figure 4 shows the sequence view, where the sequences are automatically mapped to sequential part icons. parts that are represented as icons or strings in the sequence view are color-coded according to the type of data: part position (e.g. component id), component type (e. protein, rna, dna, etc.), and annotation (e. text). metadata can be easily associated with a part, such as component type, sequence id, and meta-data annotations. this allows for easy visualization of multiple sequences on the same canvas.deviceeditor supports both text-based and sequence-based views of assembled designs (figure 4 ). a user can switch between these views by clicking the sequence view or the deviceeditor biocad button (figure 1 ). all parts in a design can be seen in both views, but the sequence view displays annotations in a way that is easier to read.deviceeditor's two views of a design can be compared and contrasted in real time. figure 4 illustrates a sequence-based representation of a crispr/cas9 (blue) and a sgrna (purple) design, along with associated annotations, such as enzyme ids. the order of part icons in the sequence view matches the textual sequence order in the sequence id column of the sequence view.
