What are we to make of a premise as peculiar as the one behind this film? A recently widowed Mr. Grey is hiring an attractive young woman as his secretary, intending to use her in the role of a sexual slave. Why, when you think about it, is he attracted to her, even though she means no harm? It would be safer, and more predictable, to suggest that he's either a sadist, or sickly, or both. But no - this is a serious movie, meant to be taken at face value. We may smile at the absurdity of the situation, but we may be listening to a sad history.This is a fascinating character, as is its director. Steven Shainberg is a rare talent, who makes films about sensitive issues that we'd rather not face. His most recent films include: the Hannah Montana: Mistle-Tremor short, making fun of the Disney Channel with its animal protagonists; Underdogs, a brilliant portrait of survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide; Fake Plastic Trees, about a small town in Oregon that produced "a nation of psychopaths," and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, about medieval urban crime. He was associate producer on The Room. Among his previous films are Three Kings, From Here to Eternity, A Better Way, The Big Bounce, and Bernie.These questions are not answered. It seems probable that whatever is going on with Mr. Grey's boss, it's much more than a matter of sexual politics. Having read Mary Gaitskill's novel, I know that our marriage was not entirely happy, and I know that she was absolutely right to leave him. Whether or not this film is a portrait of her pre- and post- split life remains to be seen. She might not feel entirely comfortable talking about her private life - or about her mother, who is still very much alive and well. Her mother is watching from a distance, as is her son St. Louis and daughter Michael, watching with approval, having given their blessing.
