the purevideo decoder uses the cuda api for its driver and also gives the user an option to use the nvidia proprietary driver. the linux development drivers also support the use of the cuda api. the cuda api was introduced with nvidia's release of gpu computing support in the nvidia cuda driver 7.5 and so far i have not seen anything in the xbmc source code that utilizes the cuda api. i can only assume that xbmc is using the cuda api for its gpu accelerated decoding as the gui and the ui logic is coded in such a way that it could be used for general purpose multimedia applications. nvidia's purevideo technology was first introduced in the nvidia geforce 8-series and it is now also available in the 8 series and later series of nvidia graphics cards. it is a technology that was developed by nvidia to provide a better user experience by taking advantage of the inherent architecture of a modern gpu to accelerate parts of video decoding process in an nvidia gpu, and thereby saving cpu resources. another reason to have the cpu decode videos is that video decoding is a hardware accelerated process. meaning that if the cpu has to decode a video that is not supported by the gpu it has to use the cpu to do the decoding process. this is bad, because cpu's decode video decoder is usually much slower than the gpu's. this means that the cpu is wasting a lot of time to do a very simple (but also very heavy) process. the geforce 6-series and the geforce 8-series also feature nvidia purevideo hd. nvidia purevideo hd is a technology that has been extended from the previous purevideo technology. now with the purevideo hd technology, nvidia also added support for hardware-accelerated decoding of 1080p videos, 1080p truehd and 1080i high definition tv video formats.
