there are at least two potential reasons why performance is poorer for cg compared to real faces. first, it is possible that the use of cg faces is not in line with how people use face recognition. an alternative possibility is that cg faces do not provide a good enough simulation of the way people actually use face recognition. although cg faces do provide some visual information about a face that cannot be obtained from photographs, it is not possible to know how many of these visual cues are more important than others. we note that this does not mean that a cg face is not useful for research. rather, it is important that researchers who use cg faces consider carefully what visual cues are critical to their research questions. for instance, in some cases, a cg face may be more appropriate than a real face as a model of face expertise because it provides a more naturalistic look. second, cg faces are in fact processed in the same way as photographs of real faces. rather, it is important to show that cg faces are equivalent to real photographs in order to conclude that expertise is being demonstrated and to establish face expertise. however, the results of experiment 1, that performance is poorer for cg compared to real faces, suggests that such equivalence has not been established. thus, the use of cg faces, although potentially useful for some research questions, should be used with caution until the question of equivalence is more fully resolved.the results of the current study add important evidence that cg faces do not allow participants to demonstrate the full extent of their face expertise. a key finding is that a stereotypical face-type is a combination of wide nose and higher reflectance, and to a lesser extent, full lips. it is worth noting that most of the current participants were white and so these findings may not generalise to an african american population. further, the use of cg faces may not be in line with how people use face recognition. nonetheless, the results do suggest that cg faces are equivalent to real photographs in terms of the ability to tap into face expertise.
