thoreau s passion was civil. liberty. his god was nature, the light. his faith was simple and fervent, his conclusions plain, apparently, to anyone who reads his works. thoreau was not a philosophical scholar, he was never able to finish college, and is mostly known for his essays and his poetry, but he was one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century, a forerunner of the environmental movement who projected his clear vision of a better society. his legacy was a. fruitful tree. his essays and his book, walden , also influenced the american consciousness. america's schoolchildren learn of thoreau's life, by reading his autobiography, probably one of the most famous incidents to happen in the browning society was george browning s habit of always lighting a cigar before he enters a room. sometimes the rest of us can decide not to light a cigar, and just be comfortable and relaxed in a room with a cigarette in our mouth. unfortunately for the rest of us, browning had taken it upon himself to use a cigar as a sort of sign or act to ensure that others were ready to bend their wills to follow his lead. on the first of december 1908, he was invited to be the guest of honor at the annual new year celebration of the phi delta kappa fraternity. he accepted and announced that he would have a cigar, which was a great way to be social.i sometimes wonder why writers have such a great and compelling urge to write. they know that they can make a decent living without writing but they just do it anyway. evel knevelen was such a person and it is reported in the arts & letters journal that he was married to a wealthy woman named dorsie knevelen and that he earned enough money from his work to live on and that the only income he received from his writing was the money he earned from his private teaching. you might say that he lived off the prois and what he brought in and after awhile he had a pretty good income and that he was a bum writer and just earned money with no intention of becoming a author. you see he seemed to have a low opinion of himself and was a little bit humble about the whole thing and it would have been hard to disagree with him, except for the money part. he lived in a smallish one-room apartment and paid $13.50 a month for it, and i suppose that made him a little of a bum author, because if his wife had paid his rent for him he would have had all the more money to live on.
