in practice, sound blaster live! was rather limited. it was only capable of 16 channels, and you could only run two of them at once. it could only support one sound card, so if you had a sound blaster live! and a sound blaster live! gold, it only supported one of them. it also supported only analog audio, not digital. also, the sound blaster live! did not support midi. instead, it used a small piece of software from esi's creative labs unit called mixdown. mixdown would load the right driver, and then would simulate a midi output port to another device. so the first time you played a midi file with the sound blaster live! it would just make a noise and tell you to try another card.the next card was the sound blaster live! gold, and it was the 32-bit pci version. it also added digital, and midi support. it was not a complete solution, however. it did not support the sound blaster 16, and it did not support sound blaster pro, which was a 32-bit pci card. it was also expensive, because esi had made it so that each card was a standalone product, rather than part of the same chipset as the sound card. esi did make this a problem by using a second sound chipset in their motherboard sound controllers, although their documentation seemed to imply that it was just a design choice. you could not use sound blaster live! gold with sound blaster pro.there was also a sound blaster live! gold duo, which was a 32-bit pci card that was part of the same chipset as the sound blaster 16. however, sound blaster live! gold duo was not supported by esi. it did not support the sound blaster 16. it also did not support sound blaster pro.
