The Tamil populace had their own kings, queens, priests, warriors, and scholars, and the Buddhist populace, which mostly consisted of Sinhalese, had its own religion. In other words, there were two distinct sub-cultures in the country. Thats not all. The Tamils practised their culture and language in the north, while Sinhalese maintained their culture and language south of the central highlands. From about the eighth century to the thirteenth, the south of the island formed a part of Tamil countries, while the central highlands and coastal area remained in Sinhala culture. There are many myths regarding the origin of the Sri Lankan ethnicity. The most popular one is that Tamils migrated from some place called Tamilayam and settled here. The word Sri Lanka means the island of the Sinhalese, and it is pretty clear that the Sinhalese came from India, whereas the Tamil people came from somewhere else. To further quell any doubt, there are places like Tellippalai in Tamil Nadu which were once the residence of the rulers of the Tamil kingdoms.Anyway, back to history. By the late 1800s, the Tamil kingdoms had declined in importance, the British had solidified their grip on the island, and Sinhala became the majority language. Although the Sinhalese had emigrated in ever-increasing numbers to the west and north from the island, today there remain no more than half a million people of Sinhalese origin in Sri Lanka. On the other hand, most of the Tamils speaking Tamil dialects have left the island in order to find work in India and other foreign countries. Tamil is also spoken by the Sinhalese in southern Sri Lanka. There are two main dialects of the Sinhalese: Central and Eastern Sinhala. Eastern Sinhala makes use of the dakshina iru system of marks in which there are no diphthongs. Besides, the Sinhalese grammar is closer to Sinhalese of Central Sri Lanka. The sounds are similar to the Sinhala dialect spoken in Sri Lanka. In contrast to Tamil, Sinhalese is a subjectively standardized form of the Sinhalese language, not an official variety.
