After he reported on the region in 2012, Zhang was publicly targeted by Uighur separatists, prompting the Chinese government to detain him for a month. In order to protect her family, Zhangs sister refused to accompany him on a visit to Urumqi, Xinjiang’s capital, and the pair had to be separated to different hotels. Zhang still has to work through informal channels to get access to documents and government officials he wants to interview in Xinjiang.
