the button is a small 3d printed button that i printed. its modeled from scratch in maya, and designed with a 3d printed part in mind. the end result was a little more tall than wide, and that was mostly due to the fact that i made the button taller by bending a zbrush sculpt tool on the inside of the button.to make the phone look in the corner of the screen, i first used the crazy animation retargeting with maya i tutorial to help retarget and animate my character in maya. i set up the scene, and then i went into the animations tab to get the reference pose for my character.when i was finished with the braids, i added a nurbs surface mesh to the character. then i created a nurbs surface in the same path as the braids. finally, i used an expression to move the hair data to the mesh, and i was left with a flexible hair surface mesh that looked very natural on the character.the hardest part for me was to make sure that the hairs were only visible when they were at the right angle for the context of the scene. i used expressions to make sure that the root hairs only showed up on the character when the camera was close up, for instance, and that the hairs on her head only showed up when the camera was looking at the top of her head.the cloth i used for the character is actually a pretty crappy cloth i got from the polycount cloth store. i didnt feel like making my own cloth, and i didnt have time to, so im using one of the cloths that they sell. its a very, very nice cloth, but one of the weirdest details is that it had a bunch of ugly little pieces of plastic and rubber material stuck all over it, making it look like some sort of crazy ill-fitting space suit. i didnt actually have any plans to put the character in outer space, so i just left the thing as-is. i just had to use xgen to add normal fuzz to the cloth, and then i had to add a bunch of little hair/fur/whatever nodes to it. i couldnt do any sort of deform or skinning on the cloth itself, because i wanted the hair to look like it was actually part of the cloth. i used pxrmarschnerhair for this, and its an amazing hair system. its basically a hair system that generates hair using volume based sampling and deformers. it has a bunch of really cool-looking settings that really made the hair look like it was part of the cloth.
