In a typical race, the player gains an amount of turbo power when accelerating and decreases when braking, with the turbo speed decreasing as the player gains more experience points in races. Turbo power is awarded at the start of the race and can be spent on a special item. Items will be rewarded as the player completes an item box and can be used in practice sessions and at the end of a race. Turbo power can also be used as a special item to activate in the aforementioned turbo modes, such as for riding the kart up or going over the Koopa or Shell tracks. Because of this, not all special items are created equal. Karts and items that require a lot of turbo speed to be used perform much better in a race than ones that require a lot of acceleration or braking. Besides the main game itself, Mario Kart Tour includes different maps, that include also custom tracks. Some of these maps have been designed by third parties and have been included for free, while others can be purchased through Nintendo eShop. Some tracks also include bonus modes and other items. It is possible to buy new items through Mario Kart Tour. If a character gets three of the same item, they will activate the new Frenzy Mode, in which they immediately activate Super Star power, and can charge all the Mini-Turbo stages much more quickly and can use unlimited supplies of the respective item until the invincibility runs out. Any item can appear in Frenzy Mode, except for the Star, which is exclusive to certain bonus challenges.
