In this episode of Global Voices on Taiwan, Marcin Jerzewski, European Values Center for Security Policy Taiwan Office Head, shares with hosts, Vincent Chao, director of the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan’s International Affairs Department and Rath Wang, a news producer and show host, what brought a Polish polyglot to Taipei and why Taiwan draws many similarities with European democracies.
Jerzewski also touches on changing attitudes in Europe towards an increasingly assertive China and the EU's recalibration of Taiwan policy. He shares how European policy makers are gradually realizing that "Wandel durch Handel," increasing trade with authoritarian regimes induce political change, is ineffective with China.
We also discuss the agency of middle powers, how the agency of the Taiwanese people is often overlooked, and specific ways to increase visibility and deepen ties with other democracies around the world.
