Appearances
A: Don’t you think Billie looks smart in her new school uniform?
B: Do you mean that Billie looks smarter than she was before because she is going to junior high now?
A: No, silly! I mean that she looks great in her uniform.
B: Oh I thought that “smart” meant “intelligent”.
A: Well it does mean that too. But you know, the same word can have different meanings. Like you can say that Donny’s hairstyle looks “cool”.
B: I guess you mean that his hairstyle is fashionable, and that it looks good?
A: That’s right. I don’t mean that I think his hairstyle would keep him cool on a hot summer’s day.
B: It might though!
A: That’s true! And he might need that, since he’s so hot!
B: Wait a minute. Do you mean he needs to cool down or that he is really good-looking?
A: Ha-ha. What do you think?
