VIP Ep. L178: Teen Sensation Antonelli Makes F1 History

Highlights

  • Kimi Antonelli won the Japanese Grand Prix to become the youngest driver ever to lead the Formula 1 World Championship, aged just 19.
  • Despite qualifying on pole, Antonelli dropped to sixth on the opening lap before fighting back and capitalising on a safety car to snatch the lead.
  • Too young to drink Champagne under Japanese law, Antonelli celebrated on the podium with what commentators speculated was a bottle of sparkling water.

On the podium at Suzuka last Sunday, Kimi Antonelli stood holding a silver trophy and what appeared to be sparkling water — denied Champagne, under Japanese law, for being nineteen years old. It was the perfect image for a moment Formula 1 had never seen before: a teenager atop the drivers' standings after claiming his second consecutive Grand Prix victory. The win in Japan followed his triumph in China, where he had already become the youngest race winner in the sport's history. Now, with 72 points, he surpassed the record set by a 22-year-old Lewis Hamilton in 2007 to become the youngest championship leader of all time.

Sunday's race, however, was far from straightforward. Antonelli had claimed pole position, yet stumbled badly off the line, tumbling from first to sixth within the opening lap — a recurring weakness that, by his own admission, has shadowed him all season. He kept his composure, methodically clawing back positions as rivals pitted ahead of him. The decisive swing came when a heavy crash brought out the safety car. Teammate George Russell, who had been leading comfortably, pitted just one lap before the incident and was unable to benefit. Antonelli, still on fresher tyres, pitted under the caution and rejoined at the front of the field.

From that point, the race was effectively over. Antonelli drove a flawless second stint, building an advantage of nearly 14 seconds by the chequered flag, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri second and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc third. Russell, unable to recover from the timing misfortune, finished fourth. The victory extended Antonelli's early-season momentum in emphatic fashion, reinforcing the sense that Mercedes holds a clear edge through these opening rounds.

After the race, Antonelli was characteristically measured. He acknowledged his starts remain the most pressing weakness, and pledged to use the five-week gap before Miami — after Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled due to regional conflict — to work on his clutch technique. "You can easily win or lose races with that," he said. On the championship, he was deliberately low-key: "It's still early days, but we're in a good way." Nine points ahead of Russell, this particular teenager is showing no signs of slowing down.
