RETRO TECH WEEK If one of the principles of retro computing is to do amazing things without a lot of resources, then there are few better examples of this type than BBC Micro Bot, the Mastodon account that recently posted the image everyone is looking for. like a ray-traced scene.
BBC Micro Bot is a great service for anyone who remembers the delights of the beige box Acorn computers from the 80s. We saw it a few years ago on Twitter (now called X) before it moved to alternative social media platforms including Mastodon. Enter some BASIC in Toot, include the hashtag #bbcmicrobot and the bot will run your program.
The resulting results will appear in the bot's gallery and will most likely appear as posts containing photos or videos of the results. It's quite addictive, although it's also hard not to be impressed by what some clever people can achieve in a few lines of (admittedly quite difficult to read) BASIC.
BBC BASIC appeared in 1981 and was largely written by Sophie Wilson. Derived from Atom BASIC for Acorn Atom, the language is a pillar of the British computer literacy project promoted by the BBC. For its time, it was rather fast and featured some interesting extensions to allow the definition of procedures and functions. It also provides access to high and low resolution computer screens, which is where the BBC Micro Bot comes into play.
