Apple significantly increased its autonomous vehicle testing efforts in the past year, according to filings submitted to a California agency. While Apple's secretive vehicle project has largely remained out of the public eye during its six years of development, the records reveal a substantial surge in autonomous testing activities. In the period from December 2022 to November 2023, Apple nearly quadrupled the number of miles tested on public roads compared to 2022 and surpassed the total from 2021 by over 30 times.
The majority of the testing miles occurred in the latter half of the reporting period, reaching a peak in August with 83,900 miles tested. Apple holds a permit to conduct autonomous vehicle technology testing on California's public roads, but this requires the presence of a safety driver behind the wheel. This initial step allows companies to gather valuable data on real-world streets and evaluate how their software performs in traffic.
While Apple's testing figures are lower than those of more advanced autonomous vehicle developers, direct comparisons are challenging due to variations in state reporting guidelines. For instance, Alphabet's Waymo logged 3.7 million testing miles in California with a safety driver and an additional 1.2 million miles without one. Waymo also conducted over 1.6 million miles with passengers on board. Notably, California currently permits only Waymo and Nuro to deploy commercial self-driving technology in the state.
Despite its lower testing mileage, Apple's commitment to autonomous vehicle development remains evident as it continues to make strides in testing and refining its technology on public roads.
