rabindranath's idealism was not limited to literature, but extended to every sphere of human activity. he was strongly influenced by the great indian social reformers of his day. he believed that human activities in all spheres of life, including art, literature, and religion, had to be permeated with the spirit of social reform. he made every attempt to imbue the life around him with the spirit of social reform. he had close ties with the social reformist activities of gokhale and of swami vivekananda. it is for his social reform activities that rabindranath is known today. it is also for this reason that, in the opinion of bose, he has become more popular in the west than in india. this judgment is undoubtedly erroneous. rabindranath was perhaps the most popular poet-saint in all of bengal. besides, there were few poets who could equal him in sheer genius, not only as a poet, but as a dramatist, novelist, and short story writer.tagore preferred the company of women and was very fond of wife, daughters, and sisters. his first wife was sarojini naidu, who was the daughter of a journalist. in my reminiscences, he wrote, my first marriage was not a success. i am not sure that it was a fault, but i know that it was a misfortune. the break came when sarojini gave me a son and i felt a great void in my life. in an acre of green grass, mary m. lago wrote that, because of the perpetual suffering of life, why not make an end of it, as for example, by going on a pilgrimage, by living in the forests, or by finding a certain great joy and then dying. but tagore found a more beautiful way to live. he refused to be an end himself, but to live and to give life to others.
