For an example of a GPSMapEdit, see Figure 5-15. There are not too many ways to make use of GPSMapEdit, but you can add points, edit point attributes, and move them around the map. You can also create a variety of types of custom map, such as a point specific map, as in Figure 5-16. You can also calculate bearings, routes, and travel time. You can track your travels, either on a single map or between multiple maps. GPSMapEdit is a free program, but you will have to install the Java Runtime environment. Be forewarned that Java is pretty hefty, being the standard graphical app. The presence of the Java runtime only enhances the performance and graphics of GPSMapEdit. There is a Windows binary download available on GPSMapEdit's web site, but Java is the most popular method of using GPSMapEdit. In my experience, GPSMapEdit runs best on a Windows 2000 or newer operating system with an Intel Pentium processor. It has very limited support for the older Pentium pro models.GPSMapEdit can also be controlled from a VNC or Remote Desktop connection by using the vncserver.exe that comes with the Java Runtime. To find this program, on the Start menu, go to Accessories, and select the Start Menu, then Programs, select Accessories, select Start Menu and then the Java Runtime. The name is java.exe. When you are connected to the desktop, there are several ways to control the map:You may want to check out the current version of GPSMapEdit, at the above link. This version adds features that are not in the freeware release, including sloped ways, ground indexing, and an area file for undoing edits. There is an example map in the download. It is a simple straight road and a map showing a single nautical mile of coastline.
