the invest models are configured with a quantified set of environmental/economic/socio-demographic variables that describe a site. the models combine ecological, economic, and environmental simulations, as well as analytical tools for land use planning and scenario assessment. since environmental models are used to simulate both the present and future, a wide range of issues (climate, land use, and land cover) can be simulated and compared to present conditions. the invest models are designed to be reusable, and the models can be updated at any time.invest models have been developed for several aquatic systems, including rivers, estuaries, coastal waters, and wetlands. these models have been widely used in decision support. the models cover all aspects of the water cycle, including: surface runoff, surface and groundwater flow, hydraulic conductivity, sediment transport, and biological processes.the modeling approach of invest has been tested and reviewed in the framework of the european union-funded project invest3. it includes a set of case studies and methodological innovations that allow the application of the toolset in a variety of use cases and contexts.invest models are currently available in 12 european languages (including french, german, and spanish) and one non-european language (chinese). the models include modules for geographic information systems (gis) analysis, land use and land cover, watershed description and assignment, transportation and land use allocation, stochastic weather generator, and land use planning. these modules and tools are supported by a spreadsheet-like user interface to facilitate their use. users are also offered access to a user-friendly web application to visualize and analyze the results of the model.
