As a scholarly history of Indian thought, Manu is a major text in the study of historiography and the many of its narrations are the basis for customary Hinduism. Therefore, in this sutra or treatise, Manu defines the duties of rulers, their duties to the king, their personal duties, their duties to their wives, to the poor and the oppressed, and their duties to the gods. It is considered as the most sacred scripture of human beings. Manu was the name of the last of the "Manus". As per Hindu tradition, Manu, a king, is one of the seven Manus, and the details of these seven Manus is detailed in Manu-shastra. It is attributed to Vardhamana, a sage who lived around 1400 BC. Manu is considered one of the most popular Hindu scriptures in the country. Manu Dharmashastra comprises the six books of Manu and his other work called Niti (the science of governance or as explained by C. J. Chopra). It is the foundational text for Paninian jurisprudence, on the principles of Hindu law, together with the Vishnu Smriti of Gautama. The system of Hindu Law is known as Manu Dharma. It is said that Manu compiled the book over the course of 25 years after a revelation from the divine being. It is believed to have been written sometime in the early 2nd century BC. The Manusmriti is the first compilation of Hindu dharma texts, and has traditionally been attributed to Bharata Muni. The first two books of Manusmriti do not exist in any Sanskrit text. There are references to Manusmriti in Panini s commentary on the Nirukta. However, the Manusmriti is mentioned in the the Vedaas. It is mentioned in the texts of the epics of the Indian epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Adhyaya (chapter) of the Manusmriti is also mentioned in the Shukla Yajur Veda, and the second book of the Manusmriti is mentioned in the Shukla Yajur Veda. It is the scripture that defines the duties of the rulers in the Hindu society. It is believed to have been compiled sometime between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century CE.
