if you're looking for a racing game that will throw you into the deep end and teach you the basics in a few races, then this is certainly a game that will appeal to you. and if you're a fan of the series, and you're not familiar with the track and car layouts, then it can be a real joy to play through a season, although there is a fair bit of trial and error involved. but i'm inclined to believe that the sheer breadth of the cars, circuits and cars on offer - even if you just want to race a few selected events - makes this a worthwhile game for any racing fan. whether you're a novice or a seasoned enthusiast, toca race driver should satisfy all.though youre free to choose any car you want for each championship, the rewards for your efforts are much better when you opt to use a car from a particular manufacturer, as codemasters has presumably thought up a quota of cars for each brand. in fact, we were surprised to discover that there are only a handful of cars from each manufacturer, and that you can only use one of them at a time. as such, world tour mode becomes a pretty limited experience. theres only one gt championship to race in, for example, and codemasters has only added a single car, the ferrari 458 italia, to the selection. a racing game that takes place in a particular country will usually offer you a selection of cars based around that countries car manufacturers, but the lack of variety in this case really limits what you can do.as for the less satisfying career mode, it probably has a much bigger problem than a lack of variety. there is simply no point to it. while the world tour mode is only a few hours long, the career mode is in the order of several weeks. you can choose to race in all the championships, or just a couple, but we were pretty happy to race in just a couple, and we managed to win a few races along the way. you can also choose to compete in only one or two rounds of the championship, but theres no way to replay a round to see how you did before you make the final decision. in fact, youre generally not even rewarded for doing well at these lower levels. if you do really well, you can usually be sure to win a few more races, but you might not even get a championship for the single race you win. in the end, it becomes a bit of a lottery, with the chance of winning a championship always being pretty slim.
