in the last decade, the industry has made an undeniable turn towards original content. while netflix and amazon have made a big splash in original programming, more and more networks are partnering with production companies and studios to make their own original movies. these original movies provide us with a lot of entertainment and are usually very funny. this year alone, netflix is releasing the ridiculous six, crouching tiger, hidden dragon: sword of destiny, the edge of seventeen, and tiger king.nowadays, you can buy movies on demand, but back in the 90s you couldnt get a movie on your tv without leaving the comfort of your couch. and thats just the type of movie that the last broadcast is: a harrowing, often bewildering, occasionally funny drama about a young reporter who joins a struggling local news station to record a live broadcast from a bus full of passengers who are being taken away by the police. its a film about what it means to be lost in public space, and how being lost can be a source of power. or, as one of the passengers says, a terrifying curse. the last broadcast is a relentlessly bleak movie about watching the world burn, and the world watching you burn. singerrian johnson has made some of the smartest, funniest films of the last decade, including brick and the brothers bloom (not to mention the other half of the brick movie). in his new directorial effort, he tackles the form of the cyberpunk thriller, and the result is a genuinely thrilling and inventive space adventure. the film begins with an abduction of a young girl (amanda seyfried) who is rescued by two scavengers (mark rylance and chi mcbride) and a beautiful, mysterious woman (anya taylor-joy) who rescues their ship from the clutches of an evil corporation. from here on out, it gets a little hard to follow, but ultimately its a lot of fun.
