Given that our user profile was in a separate, removable hard drive, the upgrade process went much faster. No WIM image was needed, and it took just five to 10 minutes to complete the process. Uninstalling Office was similar. All we did was re-deploy the Office 2007 setup executable. The setup wizard ran flawlessly, and Office opened without a hitch. Once the configuration wizard was finished, the only error we encountered was an Office-related issue. When running in Windows XP mode, the manual configuration of the Network Connection Server settings window appeared to hang during the initial configuration. The error log opened briefly, then closed, without ever displaying the setup window. The log reports that "a relevant event did not occur in the client" and "a Network Provider was not correctly added to the System Startup." There was no documentation describing what it means. Other than that minor issue, we had a smooth ride through the upgrade. The final setup wizard includes a settings window that can be customized to suit each system. For us, we selected Custom, and entered a few system settings. The destination diskspace, for example, was set to 83,567 MB. Also selected: Run the Setup Experience as an Administrator, Turn on Automatic Updates, and Install Updates Online, rather than waiting for them to be delivered. While not required, we decided to select a Background image for the new computer, pointing it toward the pink Windows Vista wallpaper. We felt this would best reflect how Windows Vista looks to new users. The initial setup window in Windows Vista also includes a number of choice settings. Like Windows XP, we selected the custom option and entered the disk space we wanted to use (83,567 MB). We were also given the option to reconfigure how the computer's desktop icons are displayed. We selected the Desktop, and then the Spaces in the list that follows. After a few more settings, including assigning a name to the new hard drive, we were ready to enter the setup wizard.
