This is a really great start to the Corgi Malice novels. John Gwynne has created a work that is every bit the equal of the first in the series. It takes the action, the characters and the setting of the first book and expands on it in lots of new and unexpected ways. Rather than build up to something huge, the author keeps the tension high right from the start. I've no idea how many times I shouted "Oh My God!" or stared open mouthed at the computer screen, as various denouments unfolded.I was impressed, thoroughly impressed, with this novel. The author has managed to retain every bit of the magic that I enjoyed about the first book. The real star, as always, is the characters and I was particularly entranced by Tull and his transformation from gentle giant to fiercely loyal friend and warrior. The battle scenes are not merely bloody but dramatic and overwhelming. They manage to give a sense of scale that a battle of this size could never hold. Of course, the set-up is perfect, too, as we begin to see that Gwynne has built the perfect platform for all he's about to do. He's devised a series of inter-connected battles that culminate in a series of remorseless to-ings and fro-ings of armies of the fantastic, the magical and the just plain bizarre. I was left slightly breathless with the author's genius, but also utterly fascinated. The story grips, the characters are complex and believable, the villains are pretty damned nasty and the dialog is superb. I loved this book and I hope it has been a taste of things to come. The plot : The author demonstrates some excellent courtroom scenes. Ruin and the son of the king, the young man and his ex-girlfriend, the young man's best friend, the king's justice, the best friend's girlfriend, the son of the King's Justice and the leader of the giants, the King's Justice and the ex-girlfriend, the king's lawyer, the people of the villages, the giants in general, the giants' leader, the city guardsman. An absolutely fantastic plot with lots of twists and turns and action. * Bookworm Blues *
