Together, Wilma McLeod, Scott McLeod, Frances McLeod, and Dorothy Pendergast, formed an underground cell of the F.B.I. “An Exclusive Club Only to F.B.I. Agents or Members of the F.B.I.. In the fall of 1973, McLeod and McLeod requested F.B.I. agent Joseph Aouillia to ask Bertino to become a member of this group. She agreed and scheduled meetings at a fish market on the Chicago River, and introduced him to Pendergast and her sister, Dorothy, with whom she had grown up. Dorothy Pendergast and Frances McLeod were undercover F.B.I. agents who lived and worked as secretaries in a Hollywood office building. With McLeod and McLeod, Bertino and Aouillia held regular meetings which became routine and informative. However, Bertino was reluctant to join the Communist Party because of his fear of going to jail. Wilma McLeod finally convinced him to join the Communist Party and in April 1974, Bertino signed a sworn affidavit indicating his willingness to join the Party and agreed to attend a Communist Party conference and demonstrate his support. Bertino had agreed to do this at a meeting with McLeod and McLeod at the fish market. When McLeod and McLeod asked Bertino to join the Communist Party, Bertino got upset and asked them if he could say no. McLeod assured him that he could, and that no one was going to charge him with anything. On November 7, 1974, Aouillia introduced Bertino to three other agents. They were Wilma McLeod, Scott McLeod, and Dorothy Pendergast. Bertino was told that he was being introduced to a group of idealistic people that would help Bertino achieve his goals.
