the survey of the local group stars for exoplanet transits around m stars and stars in open clusters was performed using a ccd camera at the 1.8 m telescope at the izaña observatory. the survey, which is part of the pastelo (pulsation and asteroseismology of variable stars in local open clusters) project, has resulted in the discovery of at least 14 new planetary transits around 10 cool m stars in open clusters and two m-dwarf binaries. these new exoplanets have been detected in the 2.7-2.8 magnitude range and have been identified using the transit method. for some of the stars, the periods and depths of the transits are compatible with those of known planets in the solar system. while this detection method has the potential to be used for the detection of exoplanets in close orbits around faint stars, it remains inefficient to detect planets around faint stars in wide orbits, such as those found in the pleiades.the physical nature of the anomalous white dwarf pg 1159-035 has been a subject of controversy over several years. this white dwarf has been the subject of many detailed analyses of its spectrum, its light curve, and its chemical composition. although no single explanation has emerged to explain its unusual properties, recent models indicate that a long-period super-soft x-ray source (sss) could explain its unique optical and x-ray properties. we discuss a theoretical model that satisfies all current observational constraints for the sss emission from pg 1159-035 and we present several observational tests that can verify or disprove this model.the aim of this study was to determine the pulsation properties of the massive white dwarf progenitor of the type ia sn 2001el. the star is located in an old lmc globular cluster, the smc g1, with a mass of about 1.5 m°. this cluster is known to host a large population of nonradial pulsators that might be connected to some of the thermonuclear sne ia progenitors.
