the final stage was a hilly stage from saint-quentin to boulogne-sur-mer. the first half of the stage was dominated by a large breakaway, which included thibaut pinot, dylan groenewegen, maxime bouet, julian alaphilippe, and daryl impey. the peloton was too large to chase the breakaway, so when the group got to the base of the final climb of the day, it was the riders in the field that went to the front. pinot had attacked on the final climb, and his lead was too great for him to be caught by the group behind him. in the end, alaphilippe went solo and took the stage victory. groenewegen took second, with bouet and impey taking third and fourth. on august 14 in albi, groenewegen would win the stage to albi. after a long breakaway on the road, van aert would not be able to ride back with the team and would abandon the tour on stage six. but the day was to be a turning point in groenewegen’s season. on that stage, his early season form was at its highest, even if he didn’t really know how to use it to best effect. all he wanted to do was win the stage, and he was so impressive on that day that he would go on to win the stage to bayonne and the next. on the stage to bayonne, he finally found his best form, and as a result, he would win the tour de france, with his best result of fifth place in the final overall classification.the change of team would mean a change of team. in early september, i was the first to know. the day after the stage to albi, i called the team, and the team was to be deceuninck-quick-step, where i had been a rider for more than a decade. it was the team i had waited for since joining the team in 2009, the team i believed in and the team i wanted to be a part of.
